Fast Company magazine has named Ocean Renewable Power Co., which recently launched an historic tidal energy project in Washington County, one of the world’s Top 10 most innovative companies in the energy sector.

ORPC, which is based in Portland, landed in 8th place in the magazine’s 2013 rankings.

Last fall, ORPC made history when it submerged a 98-foot long turbine in Cobscook Bay. It will undergo a year of testing that is underwritten by the U.S. Department of Energy as part of a $10 million grant.

The company is also experimenting with tidal power from Alaskan rivers.

Topping the list of the world’s most innovative energy companies were Nest (#1), Landwasher (#2) and Enalta (#3).
